New Orleans, LA – In preparation of potential storm in the Gulf of Mexico, leadership of the Flood Protection Authority East closed several gates within the flood protection system. A total of 10 railroad or roadway gates, 12 maintenance gates and 8 valves are closed as high tides and surge are the primary impacts. According to the National Weather Service, Potential Tropical Cyclone Sixteen continues to slowly develop in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. This system is forecast to slowly strengthen and continue to accelerate to the Northeast today and through this weekend. We are expecting to see steady winds of about 20 mph within our levee system, but the higher than normal tides will continue through the weekend. We do not expect more closures of the system as the storm passes. Most of the gates will reopen by midday Saturday.
